What does it feel like to play Shroudwake?

The first time it happens, most people do not call it a mutation.

They call it luck. Instinct. A trick of the light.

They call it anything except the truth: the Shroudwake taking hold inside you.

In Shroudwake, your character is not defined by a class you choose once and then progress inside forever. You are defined by what the world has done to you; character creation does not end after session one. It keeps unfolding as you evolve.

Let’s take the Shade. The Shade is not just “good at sneaking.” The Shade is what happens when your presence starts slipping out of the world’s focus; you move through attention like smoke through a crack, and when you choose to, you leave nothing behind.

So imagine this: A narrow street in Nexus City, lit by lanterns that never quite chase the fog away. A checkpoint ahead, two city wardens bored enough to be cruel, alert enough to be dangerous. And you need to get by unseen.

The Shade does not do this with a crouch and a careful footfall. Not by hoping a single roll saves you. The Shade simply becomes harder to remember.

The lanternlight is thin here, the shadows deep, and that is enough. In the dim, you always seem to have the angle, the line of cover, the little margin of safety that other people do not get. It does not look like magic. It looks like the world offering you a blind spot, over and over.

The warden turns his head. You are already past him.

And the best part is what you leave behind: nothing. No disturbed dust. No smear of mud. No snapped stem. If this goes wrong, there will be no trail to hunt. This is the Shade’s gift: not invisibility, but erasure.

And Then You Keep Evolving…

Awakening is only the beginning. Later, your character’s evolution can branch into Racial Mutations…paths that feel like mythic lineages emerging through that constant evolution rather than a mere choice at character creation. And beyond that, deeper doors open: Symbiotic evolutions that further change how your powers manifest, and finally, Legendary evolutions that turn your character into the kind of being the world starts whispering about.

We will talk about those soon.

For now, this is what you should know:

In Shroudwake, your character is not complete at session one. Your identity is built into play. Your powers tell a story. Your drawbacks do too.

And every Writ asks the same question, again and again:

What are you becoming?
