Crafting Change: The Art of Stymcraft in Shroudwake
In a world transformed by the Shroudwake, mutation does not belong only to the people and creatures living within it. It exists in forests, storms, stone, weapons, ruins, and countless other pieces of the world. That raised an interesting question during the development of Shroudwake: if mutation is everywhere, why shouldn't people learn how to use it?
That idea became Styms.
Styms are created by harvesting mutated material and learning how to shape the strange properties contained within it. They are not the source of mutation. Instead, they are a way of capturing, directing, and repurposing something that already exists throughout the world.
Within Guildarvein, generations of experimentation transformed what began as crude attempts to extract mutated essence into an entire discipline: Stymcraft. Researchers, craftsmen, guilds, and less reputable practitioners have all learned different ways of turning mutation into something useful.

Turning the World Into a Resource
One of the goals behind Stymcraft is to make encounters leave something behind beyond traditional treasure.
Defeat a strange mutated creature and a skilled Stymcrafter may be able to harvest part of what made it strange. Discover an unnatural phenomenon deep within the wilderness and its mutation might become valuable material. Find a forgotten blueprint in a ruin and suddenly those materials have a purpose.
That creates a loop between exploration, encounters, crafting, and future adventures.
The creature you defeat today could provide the part you need several Writs later. The blueprint hidden in an abandoned laboratory may suddenly make a strange material you've been carrying incredibly valuable. What appears to be an environmental oddity might be exactly what your Stymcrafter has been searching for.
What Is a Stym?
Styms generally fall into three categories.
Banal Styms mutate objects. Weapons, armor, tools, structures, and other otherwise ordinary things can be given extraordinary properties. A sword might carry an unnatural effect, while something as mundane as a doorway could be transformed into something far stranger. Their mutated properties can eventually Fade through use, returning the object to its ordinary state.
Nature Styms take the concept much further. These Styms manipulate the natural world itself. Vegetation, mineral deposits, landscapes, weather, and other natural phenomena can potentially be transformed. Unlike most other Styms, their effects are typically permanent.
Finally, Temp Styms provide a more fleeting form of mutation. They temporarily reproduce properties that might otherwise belong to Banal or Nature Styms, requiring fewer materials but lasting only briefly. Once used, their mutation is spent.
Together, these categories allow Styms to fill very different roles. Some are equipment. Some are tools. Some alter an environment. Others exist because somebody looked at the impossible and decided to bottle it.
Crafting Something Impossible
Stymcraft is intended to allow players to bring something into the world.
First, you need the knowledge to create what you want. That comes in the form of Stym Blueprints. These might be traditional instructions, but this is Shroudwake...they could just as easily be encoded in a damaged crystalline archive, hidden within an ancient journal, written in a forgotten language, or concealed somewhere far stranger.
Then you need the mutated parts.
Harvesting is tied to the rarity of whatever produced those materials, with increasingly powerful creations demanding increasingly rare components. Once the parts and blueprint are secured, the Stymcrafter uses their Stymcraft skill to determine success and the time it will take to complete.
And because crafting takes place alongside the adventures, time is measured in Writs. Greater Degrees of Success can reduce how long the project takes, meaning mastery does not simply determine whether you can create something, it can determine how efficiently you bring it into existence.
Crafting therefore becomes another form of progression. Your growing knowledge of the world can literally change what you are capable of creating from it.

The Shroudwake Never Stops Giving You Something to Discover
That is ultimately what Styms are meant to reinforce.
We want players to look at the world of Shroudwake differently. A bizarre creature is something to survive, but perhaps also something to study. A mutated forest is an obstacle, but perhaps also an opportunity. A forgotten ruin might contain treasure, but the most valuable thing inside could be the knowledge required to turn something you already found into something extraordinary.
